After 18 years, The Matrix franchise teases its fourth installment on Wednesday, September 8, 2021, with a unique approach to using trailers as a marketing strategy.
The Matrix: Resurrections features a unique trailer that allows the audience to choose between two pills: the red or the blue pill. Depending on the time of day and the chosen pill, the trailer that the viewer receives will also change.
The two pills are a reference to the pop culture phenomena that was a core scene of the earlier films in the franchise. The red pill is associated with being freed from the reality that the characters perceive, while the blue one keeps them “ignorant” but comfortable in the reality they live in. The red pills show hints from past movie lore, such as the black cat that signifies a “glitch” in the Matrix. Meanwhile, the blue pill tells the viewers that they can no longer distinguish reality from fiction.
Both trailers feature the core cast, such as Keanu Reeves, Jonathan Groff, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jessica Henwick, and Carrie-Anne Moss.
The first Matrix movie was released in 1999, and the third installment was released in 2003. The Matrix: Resurrections is expected to be released on December 22, 2021, 18 years after the third movie.
