Featuring the talents of homegrown Mapúan students and faculty members became the highlight of the mini-musical concert event “Into the Limelight” during the closing ceremony of this year’s Arts and Letters week, last July 9, 2021, held virtually in the Arts and Letters Student Council’s (ASLC) official social media page.
The Department of Arts and Letters (DAL) in partnership with the Arts and Letters Student Council (ALSC) hosted a mini-concert to officially mark the end of the department’s week-long celebration that happened last July 5 – 9, 2021.
Twenty-one (21) musical performances and indie talents of different genres were showcased by exceptional Mapuans during the 150 minute-concert organized by DAL and ALSC.
Ms. Cardinals 2019 and ALSC President, Chloe Hanna B. Carillo formally opened the mini-concert and showed her gratitude to the people, and organizations behind the success of the DAL Week and the mini-concert.
Jive with the OPM
It was the OPM (Outstanding Performing Mapúans) music that stole the heart and feelings of the Mapúan community.
Inspired by the Original Pilipino Music (OPM) performed by the likes of Ben & Ben and other artists, The Pendings featuring their original hit Unang Tingin gave a glimpse of emotion to several Mapúan in the first part of the show.
Several Mapuans was caught expressing their emotions in the comment section as the band provided the listeners with heart-warming lyrics of their original cover.
This was followed by a guitar performance from Amadeo Penaranda; a dance cover from the tune of Kiss and Makeup from Kyleen Marie C. Protacio and Franchesca L. Tuazon; and a classical musical cover of Way back into Love performed by Estefanee Cacanindin, Karmin Antonio, Tia Espejo, Elixeline Brintanico and Stephanie Zaguiree.
Moreover, the faculty of the Department of Arts and Letters stole the spotlight as we witnessed musical video performances from the 70s, 80s, 90s, and the recent.
Deep into the Hearts
Emotions continue to flow as more love, sentimental and heart-breaking songs were performed by the Outstanding Performing Mapúans.
Ź, Andy Calica, and Sean Polo started the second part of the show with their performance of the songs Burnout, Dancing on my own, and I still like you, respectively. This was followed by Kurt Russel Dela Cruz, singing the Gary Valenciano song How did you know. Moreover, Gian Calibuso sang his original single Multo in memory of the people ghosted by their loved one.
Short song covers from Michelle Leung (Hidden in the sand), Ariel Ambi (Little Things), John Lloyd Sosa (Love Yourself), and John Harvey Marticio (Your Universe) were also rendered during the mini-concert event.
Covers and instrumentals were also showcased by John Christian Diamante (Kalimba cover), John Bravo (Bravo Cover), Mary Ann Trisha S. Noblejas (Looking through the eyes), and Arni Angeles (Toto Cover).
Save the Best for Last
They say that the finale is always the most memorable one.
As the concert approached the finale, five more musical covers from the talented Mapúans and non-Mapúans took the limelight of the mini-concert.
Chin Detera and Shawn Valerio, performed their musical cover Martyr. This was followed by another music performance of The Pendings with their original song entitled Tangkay.
Moreover, Kyla Miel Camerong wowed the crowd as she sang Joji’s Head in the Clouds. On the other hand, Czarina Lopez of De La Salle University performed People Need a Melody by The Head and the Heart.
Ending the musical concert with a finale song are the quintets Grace Domingo, Keziah Soleno, Kerstein Tadena, Ezekiel Tolentino, and Isaac Sarte with Ben&Ben’s Kathang Isip.
