Marvel Studios reaffirms the canonicity of Agent Carter

“There are often rumors that are true and there are often rumors that are not.”

“The Story of Marvel Studios: The Making of the Marvel Cinematic Universe” hit the bookshelves last October 19, 2021. The book focuses on the inside story of one of the massive superhero franchises in Hollywood that fans grew to admire from the perspective of producers, writers, directors, concept artists, VFX artists, cast, and crew.

In one of the many sections of the aforementioned book, it has been stated that Marvel’s Agent Carter featured “canon storytelling,” which "dovetail[ed] back into future films.”

The Agent Carter series centered on Peggy Carter’s life after the events of Captain America: The First Avenger and Agent Carter One-Shot (A Short Film). Hayley Atwell reprised her role as the titular character from the films with James D'Arcy as Edwin Jarvis, Chad Michael Murray as Jack Thompson, and Enver Gjokaj as Daniel Sousa.

The canonicity of Marvel TV shows pre-WandaVision have always been the subject of debates among Marvel fans due to the TV shows being under the Marvel TV brand while the films and current series on Disney Plus under the Marvel Studios brand and Kevin Feige’s jurisdiction.

Despite being under the Marvel TV brand, many Marvel Studios creatives were involved in the Agent Carter series such as Kevin Feige, Louis D'Esposito, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. Hayley Atwell and James D’ Arcy reprised their roles in Avengers: Endgame while Enver Gjokaj, later on, returned to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) via the final season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. In 2021, Hayley Atwell voiced Peggy Carter/Captain Carter in Marvel Studios’ What If…? and is rumored to make a live-action debut as Captain Carter very soon.

What about the other Marvel TV series like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Runaways, Cloak & Dagger, etc.?

Crossovers between Agent Carter and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. took place. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Runaways, and WandaVision all featured the Darkhold. All of the shows also possess both tiny and huge references to the films. Even if most projects are outside of Kevin Feige’s jurisdiction before, it doesn’t define the canonicity of the TV shows. Moreover, the canonicity doesn’t represent the quality and the overall narrative of the series. Kevin Feige has even praised the performance of Charlie Cox as Daredevil and a few other actors from the TV division.

A few, if not most of the beloved Marvel TV characters, would probably return to the MCU. It would really depend on the case and the storylines involved. As of now, it’s vague if the properties would be soft-rebooted or retconned to fit the larger MCU. Hopefully, Marvel Studios would be able to deliver what’s best for the characters, the cast, and the fans. It’s only a matter of time.
