Marvel Studios’ 2021 Disney+ Day Special (A Recap)



The Marvel Studios' 2021 Disney+ Day Special delves into the Marvel Cinematic Universe's (MCU) Disney+ series, from its emergence to what fans can expect in the future. The event features the action, emotion, drama, and humor from "WandaVision," "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier," "Loki," and "What If...?" as well as exclusive previews of upcoming programs and new projects of Marvel Studios for its home streaming service Disney+.



To begin with, a sneak peek for “Hawkeye” was shown ahead of its November 24th two-episode debut. The footage starts off with Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) using her bow and arrow with a voiceover of The Watcher (Jeffrey Wright). Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) is shown with his children foreshadowing that he’s going to struggle in deciding whether to spend time with his family and team up with Kate Bishop in order to defeat his enemies from the past, including the Tracksuit Mafia and Echo. Clint’s goal is to return to his family in time for Christmas.


MOON KNIGHT



Starring Oscar Isaac as the titular character, Moon Knight is a new action-adventure series that is set all over the world that follows a multifaceted vigilante named Marc Spector, with a dissociative identity disorder. Against the backdrop of modern and ancient Egypt, the numerous personalities that reside within him are thrown into a deadly gods' war. Mohamed Diab is the series director. The series also stars Ethan Hawke, Gaspard Ulliel, and May Calamawy and is slated for a 2022 premiere on Disney+.


The Disney+ Day special provided a teaser for the series showing some action scenes of Oscar Isaac’s character.


SHE-HULK



She-Hulk (stylized as She/Hulk) is an upcoming American television series based on the Marvel Comics superhero of the same name, created by Jessica Gao for the streaming service Disney+. It is intended to be a part of Marvel Studios' Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) television series, which will share continuity with the franchise's films. Gao is the head writer, and Kat Coiro is in charge of the directing crew.


Tatiana Maslany plays Jennifer Walters / She-Hulk. In addition, the series stars Mark Ruffalo, Tim Roth, Ginger Gonzaga, Renée Elise Goldsberry, and Jameela Jamil. Charlie Cox and Krysten Ritter are rumored to return to the MCU via She-Hulk as Matthew Murdock/Daredevil and Jessica Jones, respectively. Gao was hired in November after the series was announced in August 2019. In September 2020, Coiro signed on to direct many episodes, and Maslany was cast. Roth and Ruffalo had joined the cast by December, and Anu Valia was set to direct. Filming in Los Angeles and Atlanta, Georgia, began in mid-April 2021 and lasted until late August. She-Hulk is set to premiere in 2022 and will have ten episodes. It will be part of the MCU's fourth phase.


The teaser shown during the Disney+ Day special showed Tatiana Maslany’s Jennifer Walters and Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner interacting. A new logo was unveiled for the series as well.


MS. MARVEL



Kamala, a 16-year-old Pakistani American from Jersey City, is the series lead. She is a major fangirl of the Avengers, especially Captain Marvel. She is an aspiring artist, passionate gamer, and voracious fan-fiction scribe. Kamala has always battled to find her place in the world until she gains superpowers after being exposed to terrigen mist. Her powers are the ability to shapeshift and stretch her body. In her upcoming series, Kamala also has the ability to create purple constructs. With her additional powers, she can create objects such as a shield and dagger. Ms. Marvel, played by Iman Vellani, is Kamala Khan. Adil El Arbi & Bilall Fallah, Meera Menon, and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Executive Producers, direct the episodes.


A better look at Kamala’s powers and possible terrigenesis events was shown in the teaser.


I AM GROOT



I Am Groot is an upcoming American animated television series based on the Marvel Comics character ‘Groot’ and produced for the Disney+ streaming service. It features Marvel Cinematic Universe characters (MCU); the series includes short films directed by Kristen Lepore and produced by Marvel Studios. In December 2020, I Am Groot was unveiled, and last August 2021, photorealistic animation for the series had begun, and Lepore had joined as director by November 2021. The series will be part of the MCU’s Phase 4.


GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY: THE HOLIDAY SPECIAL



The Guardians of the Galaxy: Holiday Special is a forthcoming American television special based on the Marvel Comics superhero team ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ developed, written, and directed by James Gunn.


Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillan, and Pom Klementieff will reprise their roles from the previous films in the franchise. Before it was announced in December 2020, Gunn had been working on the concept for the special for some years. Filming for the Holiday Special is currently taking place during the production of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. As part of Phase 4 of the MCU, the Guardians of the Galaxy: Holiday Special will air on Disney+ in December 2022, which will tie in directly to the third Guardians film.


WHAT IF…? SEASON 2



What If…? is back for a second season. It was announced in December 2019 in an interview with Kevin Feige and would consist of 9 episodes. It will premiere on Disney+ soon. Unanswered questions from the first season will be tackled in the second season, as well as searching for more new multiversal heroes. Jeffrey Wright will reprise his role as The Watcher.


ECHO



Echo is a spinoff series of Hawkeye which will star newcomer Alaqua Cox as Maya Lopez/Echo. The series will take place after the events of Hawkeye. The synopsis is still vague. Casting for other characters is still taking place. The series is also rumored to feature cast and characters from the short-lived Daredevil series, with small yet prominent roles in the spinoff.


LOKI SEASON 2



The second season of Loki has teased during the season one finale of the series. Loki will deal with the ramifications of Sylvie killing He Who Remains and the breaking of the multiverse. In the Time Variance Authority (TVA), Mobius and Hunter B-15 are unaware of Loki’s identity.


X-MEN ‘97



X-Men ‘97 is a series revival of the beloved classic X-Men series. The series will delve into new adventures set in the classic 1990s era of the original series. Executive Producer Beau DeMayo penned the script. The revival will premiere in 2023.


SPIDER-MAN: FRESHMAN YEAR



Spider-Man: Freshman Year is a prequel animated series featuring Peter Parker. The series is set after the events of Captain America: Civil War and Spider-Man: Homecoming. It is still unsure if Tom Holland will be the one to voice Peter Parker in Freshman Year.


IRON HEART



Iron Heart is a Disney+ series starring Dominique Thorne as the titular character. The series will consist of six episodes. The synopsis is yet to be announced.


AGATHA: HOUSE OF HARKNESS



Agatha: House of Harkness is a WandaVision spinoff series starring Kathryn Hahn as Agatha Harkness. The plot is still unknown.


ARMOR WARS



Armor Wars is a new miniseries based on the same Marvel Comics event. The series is a follow-up to Avengers: Endgame. The series stars Don Cheadle as James Rhodes/War Machine. Armor Wars will deal with Tony Stark’s worst nightmare coming to life.


MARVEL ZOMBIES



After the success of the first season of What If…? and What If... Zombies?! being a fan-favorite episode, Marvel Studios finally gives the Marvel Zombies comic book its own Disney Plus series. Other details of the series have not been disclosed yet.


SECRET INVASION



Saving the best for last, the Marvel Studios’ 2021 Disney Plus Day Special concludes with a new logo for the miniseries and an exclusive first look at Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury.


Secret Invasion is based on the comic book event of the same name. The confirmed cast for Secret Invasion includes Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Ben Mendelsohn as Talos, Olivia Coleman, Emilia Clarke, Christopher McDonald, Kingsley Ben-Adir, and Killian Scott. Kyle Bradstreet serves as the writer for the series, while Thomas Bezucha and Ali Selim serve as the series directors.


Fury and Talos attempt to defeat the evil Skrulls who have infiltrated every organization and position.


The series is also rumored to include fan-favorite MCU cast and characters including Clark Gregg as Phil Coulson, Chloe Bennet as Daisy Johnson/Quake, Elizabeth Henstridge as Jemma Simmons, Charlie Cox as Matthew Murdock/Daredevil, Brie Larson as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau, Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill and many more.



It was also announced that Shang-Chi and the Legend of Ten Rings, Black Widow, and other MCU films are available in IMAX for a much better viewing experience on Disney+.



The future of the MCU on Disney+ is looking bright. Every Marvel fan is fed with content. That’s just Phase 4, for now.
