Former President Noynoy Aquino dies at 61

Updated: Jun 28, 2021

Former president Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III has passed away at the age of 61, various sources close to his family confirmed on Thursday, June 24, 2021.

According to initial reports, Aquino was taken to the Capitol Medical Center in Quezon City on Thursday morning for unspecified reasons.

Since the beginning of 2019, Aquino has been afflicted with a range of diseases. He had been on dialysis for at least five months and had recently had heart surgery.

Aquino's representative and former deputy spokesman, lawyer Abigail Valte, declined to issue any information in a chance interview with reporters waiting outside the hospital but said the family would release an official statement later.

Aquino was set to be the vice-presidential candidate of former senator Manuel Roxas II in the 2010 elections, but they were obliged to exchange places due to public uproar. He ran the position as the Liberal Party's presidential candidate shortly after his mother, former President Cory Aquino, died in 2009.

At the age of 50, he was appointed as the 15th President of the Philippines.
