Disney Plus greenlights the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series

In May 2020, it was initially announced that a series adaption of the Rick Riordan book series, Percy Jackson, was in the works at the streamer. Casting for the series is underway and in a video message, Rick Riordan confirmed the continuation of the series. The pilot, which is the first episode of the series will be written by Riordan and Jon Steinberg, with James Bobin directing. Bobin recently directed and executive produced Disney Plus' "Mysterious Benedict Society" series and the film "Dora and the Lost City of Gold," while Steinberg is currently on an overall deal with Disney's 20th Television.

The "Percy Jackson" series and even the two movies released back in 2010 and 2013, portray the fictional story of the protagonist 12-year-old modern demigod, who is just coming to terms with his newfound magical powers when he is accused of stealing the lightning bolt of Zeus. Percy now has to travel throughout America in search of it and restore order to Olympus. President of 20th Television, Karey Burke stated that Rick Riordan and his team already had this mission of releasing and bringing Percy Jackson books to Disney Plus.

The Percy Jackson book series written by Rick Riordan is composed of 7 books in total. Namely, “The Lightning Thief”, “Sea of Monsters”, “The Titan’s Curse”, “The Battle of the Labyrinth”, and “The Last Olympian”. Riordan also published two more books that served as companion books called, “The Demigod Files” and “The Demigod Diaries”. Disney Streaming President, Michael Paull stated that it is an opportunity for Disney Plus to have a new fantasy series like Percy Jackson to have it on their streaming platform for fans and audiences around the world.
